Principles for the Revision of Failed TMJ Prostheses

Download Handouts

Louis Mercuri, DDS, MS
Professor of Surgery, Loyola University Medical Center
Maywood, IL

Synopsis

Since the majority of total alloplastic TMJ patients are reported to be young and it is likely that an alloplastic TMJ device with an indefinite lifespan can be developed, it appears appropriate to emphasize the principles and techniques of revision arthroplasty. It will be the purpose of this clinic to present a paradigm for the revision of failed and failing alloplastic TMJ prosthetic devices.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  1. Decrease the incidence of catastrophic failure of TMJ alloplastic devices which can result in chronic, severely debilitated patients.
  2. Detect failed and/or failing TMJ alloplastic devices as a source of a patient's complaints before catastrophic failure and greater tissue damage.
  3. Provide a logical step-wise approach to diagnosis, management and long-term follow-up of alloplastic TMJ devices to prevent catastrophic failure.
