Synopsis

This course will be divided into six major areas of concentration related to treatment of patients with cleft lip and palate deformities. Each type will be discussed in a similar format as follows: A review of a standard surgical technique will explained and illustrated. This description will utilize slides, videos , pre- and post-op pictures, post-op care as well as any other surgical pearls. Following each of the surgical procedures, a review of the current literature will be presented to give an evidence based discussion related to choice of procedures, timing and other related issues. Treatment planning from infant to young adult will be discussed.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the rational and technique of major surgical procedures for treatment of cleft lip and palate patient.
  2. Discuss the benefits and differences in different surgical repairs in the cleft lip and palate surgery from the perspective of the presenters experience and review the evidence based literature.
  3. Explain the optimal timing for sequencing surgical care of the cleft lip and palate based on clinical experience and a review of the evidence based literature.
