Synopsis

Maxillofacial Osteoradionecrosis trends are reported to have changed over the last decade and may be related to new therapeutic radiation delivery systems. An increased understanding of the pathophysiology contributing to osteoradionecrosis as well as a paradigm shift in the treatment of head and neck cancers has contributed to the development of alternative strategies for the management of patients with early and advanced maxillofacial osteoradionecrosis. This presentation will review classic and contemporary evidence based therapeutic options for patients diagnosed with maxillofacial osteoradionecrosis. Additionally, an update in the radiotherapeutic management options for head and neck malignancies will be provided.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  1. Discuss the pathophysiology leading to Osteoradionecrosis, clinical presentation and management strategies.
  2. Explain the emerging trends and techniques in the delivery of radiation therapy to the head and neck and identify a contemporary risk stratification for patients with regard to the development of Osteoradionecrosis.
  3. Describe updated, evidence based alternatives to costly hyperbaric oxygen therapy and multi-staged reconstructive surgery.
