Oral Abstract Session Keynote Lecture: Odontogenic Malignancies
Dr. Eric R. Carlson
The odontogenic malignancies represent rare, yet important lesions to consider when establishing a differential diagnosis for a radiolucent jaw lesion. No doubt, the nomenclature of such entities has been, and will continue to be confusing to oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Terms such as malignant ameloblastoma, ameloblastic carcinoma, and primary intraosseous carcinoma are not self-explanatory. Moreover, some authors question the reported benign nature of the prototypical odontogenic tumor, the ameloblastoma. It is the purpose of this presentation to describe the malignant odontogenic tumors and to illustrate typical examples. In so doing, the nomenclature will be discussed and simplified.

Oral Abstract Session Keynote Lecture: Reconstruction of the Jaws and Related Structures - Then and Now
Dr. R. Gilbert Triplett
Reconstruction of the oral and maxillofacial region has slowly evolved over the last century. The almost exclusive use of autogenous tissues is slowly giving way to replacement with allografts, xenografts, alloplast and tissue engineering products such as signaling proteins. The challenge remains in tissue engineering, which can predictably and economically replace autografts for both hard and soft tissue reconstruction.
