Synopsis

In the past three years there have been multiple reports of hepatitis B transmission in healthcare settings, including oral and maxillofacial surgery. This course reviews the types of hepatitis, the risk of transmission and the techniques to prevent infection with a special emphasis on the oral and maxillofacial surgery practice.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe basic information about hepatitis B and C;
  2. Define which types of hepatitis may pose a risk to patients and healthcare workers;
  3. Identify current recommendations and requirements for infection control; and
  4. Answer questions from patients regarding the risk of disease transmission during oral surgical procedures.
