Synopsis

Patients being treated for a cancer above or below the clavicles may develop complications related to that cancer including recurrent disease in the oral cavity or neck regions and metastatic disease to the oral cavity or neck regions. Radiation-related complications may also occur including the development of mucositis, xerostomia or osteoradionecrosis. Chemotherapy-related complications may involve mucositis and bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws. To this end, a multidisciplinary approach to the patient's pre-and post-cancer treatment must be established, and this approach should include dental professionals. In so doing, patients should undergo routine dental treatment related to their cancer therapy and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon should be consulted when suspicious findings exist on examination of the oral and maxillofacial region.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  1. List the common oral complications that may develop in response to systemic chemotherapy;
  2. Discuss the value of pre-cancer treatment oral examination and control of dental disease prior to cancer treatment;
  3. Discuss the effect of radiation therapy on the oral cavity and jaws and the possible development of osteoradionecrosis of the jaws; and
  4. Discuss the possible relationship between the administration of bisphosphonate medications and the development of osteonecrosis of the jaws.
