Richard C. Robert, DDS, MS
Clinical Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University of California at San Francisco
South San Francisco, CA
Synopsis
Recent polls indicate that the majority of oral and maxillofacial surgery offices now utilize propofol as their primary anesthetic agent, but only 20-30% use an infusion pump. This course graphically demonstrate the ease of use of the pump as well as the addition of low-dose ketamine to provide a smooth anesthetic of nearly ideal characteristics.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
- Provide "state of the art" intravenous outpatient anesthesia that is keeping with advancements in anesthesia which are well documented in the literature.
- Bring the practice of propofol anesthesia in oral maxillofacial surgery closer to that utilized by anesthesiologist in outpatient surgery centers. This will enhance the patient's acceptance and safety of intravenous anesthesia for OMFS on an outpatient basis.
- Discuss the complementary pharmacologic characteristics of propofol and ketamine and describe how these agents can be utilized together in conjunction with other drugs to provide an outpatient balanced anesthetic for oral and maxillofacial surgery.
