Synopsis
Although most OMFS's now utilize propofol, few use an infusion pump. Increasing numbers are using ketamine in addition to propofol, but remifentanil is only beginning to find a place in OMFs practice. This presentation provides an in depth discussion of the incorporation of an infusion pump, ketamine and remifentanil.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
- Describe the benefits of administration of propofol with an infusion pump and discuss the use of an infusion pump to provide a continuous infusion of propofol with maximal control and patient safety;
- Describe the complementary effects of propofol and ketamine which can be capitalized upon in the development of an improved anesthetic for office-based practice; and
- Describe the unique pharmacokinetic properties of remifentanil and how these properties can enable the OMF surgeon to capitalize on the more desirable attributes of opioid anesthetic agents while providing a very safe anesthetic with more stable cardiovascular parameters.
