Synopsis

This presentation will review the anatomic basis and fundamental biologic concepts required for successful application of oral plastic surgery in implant therapy. Principles of soft tissue grafting and details of performing contemporary techniques will be presented as they apply to the natural dentition and dental implants. Evidence based information related to patient evaluation, risk assessment, and treatment planning of patients seeking single and multiple dental implant replacements in areas of high esthetic concern will be presented. Clinical case examples will be used to demonstrate the application of biologically acceptable and scientifically valid surgical and prosthetic treatment protocols for the most common case scenarios encountered in esthetic implant therapy. Strategies and methods for managing complex case types, overcoming preexisting anatomic limitations such as vertical ridge defects and managing esthetic complications will be introduced.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  1. Understand the anatomic basis and principles of oral soft tissue grafting as well as the clinical relevance of biologic width in implant dentistry;
  2. Become familiar with the indications, surgical technique, and limitations of the following oral soft tissue grafting techniques: gingival grafts, subepithelial connective tissue grafts, onlay-inlay grafts, use of soft tissue graft substitutes, and pedicle flaps performed around the natural dentition and dental implant replacements; and
  3. Become familiar with performing a pre-treatment esthetic risk assessment on potential implant patients, classification of alveolar ridge defects in esthetic areas, indications and applications of biologically acceptable and scientifically valid treatment protocols used to manage the most common case scenarios encountered in esthetic implant therapy and key concepts related to management of complex esthetic cases.
