Synopsis

Temporary anchorage devices (TAD's) typically are modifications of conventional osseointegrated implants, bone screws or bone plates used to provide absolute orthodontic anchorage. They reduce the need for patient compliance and allow orthodontic tooth movement previously thought to be impossible in terms of vector and range. An overview of the various systems and the associated research will be presented including clinical examples, the indications, advantages and limitations of each device category.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

1)Describe how orthodontic anchorage (relative and absolute) and how it (Newton's third law) affects TAD treatment planning, placement and ultimate treatment options.
  1. Increase success rate by using the appropriate device in a given clinical situation.
  2. Discuss the scientific literature regarding factors leading to success or failure with the various categories of systems.
