Synopsis
Pediatric anesthetic and medical emergencies tend to be respiratory rather than cardiovascular in nature. Preparation must be an uppermost priority and management must take into account the differences in the anatomy and physiology of the child as compared to the adult. Emergency preparedness is essential for this very special patient population.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
- Describe the critical anatomic and physiologic differences between children and adults, and how these differences are reflected in the appropriate management of anesthetic and medical emergencies in this patient population;
- Describe those aspects of office emergency preparedness which are different for pediatric patients as compared to adults; and
- Describe those tools such as the Broselow Tape which have been developed to aid in the administration of emergency drugs to pediatric patients for the prevention of inappropriate drug dosing.
