Synopsis

The intention of this presentation is to discuss the pretreatment criteria for the prosthetic, as well as the surgical treatment of the fully edentulous maxilla. To establish posterior maxillary support, axially placed implants, sinus lift procedure, the all-on-4 concept and the zygoma concept will be contrasted with each other. Immediate loading versus two-stage procedure will also be presented. Pros and cons of each technique and treatment philosophy will be discussed.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify the prosthetic protocols, the surgical limitations and the patients needs. Pretreatment evaluation of these three criteria is essential for a positive outcome.
  2. Describe the criteria to determine when to graft or when to pursue non grafting approach using tilted implant.
  3. Discuss the protocols for immediate loading of the edentulous maxilla (or mandible) along with both the surgical and prosthetic criteria.
