Synopsis

An integrated primary management of cleft lip / nose and palate with an emphasis on functional reconstruction is required to enhance a favorable outcome. Sequential and proper identification, dissection and reconstruction of the nasolabial and soft palatal musculature, lip surgery, primary rhinoplasty, hard palate closure by narrow flap technique along with gingivoperiosteoplasty enables early functional management.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the distorted musculature around nose, lips and soft palate as well as their clinical identification and dissection.
  2. Properly identify displaced soft tissue units for correct placement of incisions accordingly; periosteal and soft tissue handling techniques for physiological restoration.
  3. Avoid surgical protocol which may potentially have adverse effects in 3-D growth of related skeleton; improve functional restoration.
