Salivary Gland Disorders: An Evidenced Based Discussion of Modern Surgical and Medical Treatments

Synopsis

Salivary gland disorders affect 1% of the population and are often encountered in the practice of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. This lecture will review bacterial, viral, autoimmune and other salivary gland diseases in the pediatric and adult populations. Etiology, diagnosis, and medical and surgical treatment modalities will be presented.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe proper technique for evaluation of salivary gland diseases and the appropriate treatment for each;
  2. Describe the appropriate medical and surgical managements of salivary gland infections, including the benefits and risks of each; and
  3. Describe the etiology of acute and chronic, pediatric and adult salivary gland diseases and infections and the appropriate management.
