Synopsis

A simplified overview of the principles for outpatient anesthesia for the pediatric (<12 yo) OMS patient will be covered. Common agents, monitoring, techniques, and complications will be highlighted in the first half of the lecture. The second half of the clinic will be interactive in a case based format.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe in simplified manner the anatomic and physiologic differences between adults and children in order to deliver safe and effective pediatric sedation/general anesthesia;
  2. Describe and discuss the indications, contraindications, agents, and dosages used in IM, IV, oral, intranasal, and rectal sedation techniques in children; and
  3. Describe and discuss the prevention, recognition, and management of common pediatric emergencies.
