Synopsis

Successful airway management is the cornerstone of a safe anesthesia practice. The airway management tools available to the OMFS will be reviewed. These include the endotracheal tube, laryngeal mask airway, combitube, and cricothyroidotomy. Advantages, contraindications, instructions, and videos of placement will be covered. Tools of early airway management detection and emergency treatment of respiratory complications will also be covered.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the advantages, contraindications, and instructions for placement of the endotracheal tube, laryngeal mask airway, combitube, and cricothyroidotomy.
  2. Discuss the anatomic basis and strategies for treatment of emergency respiratory complications.
  3. Describe a simple algorithm for difficult airway management.
