Synopsis

Surgical excision of benign and malignant diseases and the treatment of maxillofacial trauma can lead to significant functional and esthetic compromise. It is important to have a diverse armamentarium of reconstructive options from local, regional and free tissue transfer. Choice of reconstructive flap can then be tailored to the individual patients needs and tolerance for donor site morbidity . We aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the many local, pedicled, and free tissue flaps that are available to the maxillofacial surgeon. A flap and defect orientated approach will be presented, along with a series of case examples of the most commonly encountered defects in maxillofacial surgery.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the anatomic basis, indications, surgical technique and complications associated with a wide array of reconstructive flaps used in maxillofacial surgery; and
  2. Describe a defect orientated approach to flap selection.
