Synopsis

This lecture will cover the management of nasal and nasal/septal fractures in terms of evaluation, imaging and treatment options. The open vs closed management of displaced nasal and nasal/ septal fractures as well as secondary septoplasty is covered in detail. Secondary septorhinoplasty and NOE fractures are only discussed in overview.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  1. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons who treat full facial trauma would benefit from improved skills to manage the acutely deviated septum, which is often the key to a satisfactory outcome from nasal fracture reduction;
  2. Understand the anatomic and physiologic principles involved in reduction of septal injuries by either closed or open techniques and treatment plan accordingly;
  3. Understand the instrumentation, coordination and application of surgical principles needed for secondary correction of nasal septal injuries; and
  4. Anticipate and prevent many functional complications of intra-nasal surgery.
