Synopsis
Speech disorders are prevalent in the cleft population and represent a significant morbidity for the individual patient. The clinical and instrumental evaluation of a child with a cleft palate will be reviewed as will the integration of this diagnostic evaluation into a rehabilitation program from both a surgeons and a speech pathologist's perspective.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
- Learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of velopharyngeal dysfunction and associated problems in the cleft population. Understand the different types of velopharyngeal dysfunction and which are amenable to surgical intervention.
- Describe the benefits and limitations of the nasendoscopy, videofluroscopy, and nasometry.
- Describe and apply the different techniques of palate repair, palate revision, and pharyngoplasty to patients with velopharyngeal insufficiency and be familiar with their associated literature.
