Synopsis
HIV/AIDS and its' treatment affect every system in the body, influencing the surgical care of these patients. Additionally, patients present to oral surgeons with oral lesions as an initial sign of HIV disease or as evidence of worsening HIV disease. This clinic provides an in depth review of the pathogenesis of HIV, systemic complications, antiretroviral therapies, and oral manifestations of HIV/AIDS.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
- Name the general categories of HIV/AIDS medications and the risks and dangerous drug interactions associated with each category that may be important in OMFS care.
- Name the common systemic complications of HIV and understand how they influence OMFS care.
- Possess the ability to recognize lesions possibly associated with HIV and their significance in the patient's disease status. Additionally, have an understanding of basic treatment modalities for these lesions.
