Synopsis

Trigeminal nerve injury occurs following routine OMS procedures, usually third molar surgery. Injuries are classified (Seddon,Sunderland) based upon the likelihood of an injured nerve to recover spontaneously. The clinical testing should be simple and performedby all OMS. Pharmacologic and non-surgical treatments are available, but microneurosurgery should not be delayed when indicated.Surgical repair involves neurolysis and preparation of nerve stumps to perform neurorrhaphy, but nerve grafting, or entubulation may alsobe used. This surgical clinic is designed to provide the requisite information necessary for the OMS regarding diagnosis, management,and appropriate referral.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  1. Permit access to care for the patients who sustain complications;
  2. Allow all OMS the opportunity to appropriately test their patients to determine the degree of nerve injury; and
  3. Educate the OMS about the current standards in this field of microneurosurgery of the trigeminal nerve.
