Synopsis
The course is intended to review the concepts of alveolar cleft bone grafting for cleft surgeons. The morphology of the deformity will be discussed, as will the various reconstructive options. The timing of grafting will be discussed, from primary grafting to late secondary grafting at the time of orthognathic surgery. Several key studies will be reviewed and the evidence for various protocols, approaches, and donor sites will be discussed in detail.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
- Review past and current concepts for the timing of alveolar cleft bone graft placement and discuss their implications with regard to the development and eruption of the permanent dentition.
- Discuss a variety of bone graft procurement and placement as they pertain to alveolar cleft bone grafting as well as review outcome data on which source best accomplishes these goals.
- Review various techniques for bone grafting and closing fistula in the cleft patient in order to minimize iatrogenic injury.
