An update and review of the principles of management, anatomy, clinical presentation, and complications of oral and maxillofacial infections. Best practices for surgical therapy are identified, including clinical evaluation, imaging, surgical approaches, drains, and postoperative follow-up. Presenting factors that predict complications, length of hospital stay, and abscess formation are identified.
