Synopsis

An update and review of the principles of management, anatomy, clinical presentation, and complications of oral and maxillofacial infections. Best practices for surgical therapy are identified, including clinical evaluation, imaging, surgical approaches, drains, and postoperative follow-up. Presenting factors that predict complications, length of hospital stay, and abscess formation are identified.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify the anatomic deep fascial spaces involved when given clinical presentation.
  2. Identify the anatomic spaces that threaten the airway, develop primary and alternate airway management plans and communicate plans to the operating team.
  3. Apply the eight principles of management of head and neck infections rapidly and thoroughly in order to achieve best possible outcomes in maxillofacial infections.
