Synopsis

Patients with anatomic abnormalities that contribute to narrowing or obstruction of the pharyngeal airway during sleep will benefit from surgery to normalize the hard and soft tissue structures. The oral and maxillofacial surgeon's experience allows the development of a treatment plan in an objective fashion using set criteria. This approach results in a more predictable outcome and a much higher rate of success than treatment recommended based on trial and error. The purpose of this course is to present scientific rationale for considering MMA as a surgical treatment of choice in selected patients.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the cephalometric analysis and surgical techniques that can be used to identify and successfully treat the abnormal hard and soft tissue anatomy in obstructive sleep apnea patients; and
  2. Describe the biologic foundation which affects the success/failure rates for many of the common recommended treatment options, both surgical and non-surgical.
