Synopsis
The treatment planning and surgical management of patients with small and complex bony deficiencies and medical problems continues to be a reconstructive challenge for oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Today's 3D computer software technologies and the use of computer generated surgical guides offer new tools for the surgeon .The surgeon can evaluate and treat patients "virtually", prior to performing "exploratory" reconstructive and implant surgery. These technologies allow the surgeon to think "out of the box" in sequencing and planning surgeries in these complicated patients. This clinic will discuss the benefit of using these technologies in patients requiring bone grafting, ridge splitting, alveolar and maxillary distraction, and complex reconstructive problems that the oral and maxillofacial surgeon faces. Applications in trauma, pathology, and radiation therapy patients will be discussed as well.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
- Explain how 3D "virtual" computer software technologies and surgical guides can improve results in challenging reconstructive cases.
- Discuss how "virtual" implant treatment planning and surgical guides can identify abnormal bony anatomy prior to the doctor performing open surgical procedures, thus improving surgical outcomes in these reconstructive patients. He/she will learn how implants can be placed flapless, with more predictability and minimal trauma, by using these new technologies in these challenging cases.
