Cleft Lip and Palate: Primary Surgical Repair Techniques

Synopsis

A systematic review of the most common surgical procedures for the repair of primary cleft lip and palate deformities will be described in a systematic approach . The Tennison Randall and Millard lip repair techniques and the Veau, Langenback, VY pushback and furlow palatal repair procedures will be highlighted. The indications, planning and step by step instructions will be presented. The advantages and disadvantages for each of these techniques will be reviewed. Finally, time permitting minor revision procedures to repair residual palatal fistulaes and correct residual whistle tip lip deformities will also be addressed.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  1. Understand the incidence and anatomy patho-physiology of the cleft lip palate deformity; and
  2. Understand the timing and procedures most commonly utilized in the surgical repair of the cleft lip and palate deformities.
