Surgical Management of the Patient on Modern Chemotherapeutic Agents

Synopsis

Approximately 1.5 million Americans are expected to be diagnosed with cancer annually and cancer is the second most frequent cause of mortality after cardiovascular disease. Newer treatment regimens and the use of novel biologic agents have resulted in improved survival rates in many types of cancers. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are often involved in the management as a result of cancer therapy. With advancements in chemotherapy delivery, many of these patients are now treated in the community setting rather than in academic cancer centers. This highlights the importance of updating our knowledge of management of these patients.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this symposium, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the principles of modern chemotherapy management of hematopoietic malignancies;
  2. Describe the immunosuppressive effects of chemotherapeutic agents and the supportive strategies to minimize such effects; and
  3. Discuss the oral complications of chemotherapy and to improve your management of such complications.
