Systemic Implications of Oral Infection/Inflammatory Disease

Synopsis

This symposium will focus on the new evidence that links oral infection with systemic diseases. This involves understanding the behavior and characteristics of the oral biofilms and the mechanisms by which it triggers local and systemic inflammation. Recent data indicate that the third molars are the local initiators of periodontal disease and that as this infection involves the full dentition it can disseminate, leading to increases in serum markers of inflammation including C-reactive protein and various cytokines. These inflammatory processes provide the mechanistic link between oral infection and many systemic diseases including cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, diabetes, and pregnancy complications. The latest information regarding the linkages with periodontal disease and the clinical implications will be discussed.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this symposium, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the mechanisms of the chronic inflammatory pathways;
  2. Describe the host immune responses to chronic inflammation; and
  3. Explain the linkage between chronic inflammation and systemic diseases including cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, diabetes, and pregnancy complications.
