AAOMS Keynote Lecture


Synopsis

The globalization of medicine will have a profound effect on the provision of healthcare world wide. This globalization will impact the flow of patients and providers, the faculty and trainees in education programs, program accreditation and surgeon certification, laws and regulations relative to the provision of healthcare and litigation, healthcare funding, and even whether the patient and surgeon will be at the same site during an operation. These changes will require innovative thinking and action to assure that healthcare quality and patient safety improve in this new globalized world.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this symposium, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the current international environment in healthcare;
  2. Discuss the impact that globalization in healthcare will have on movement/flow of patients and providers, training programs, program accreditation and surgeon certification, laws and regulations concerning licensure and practice, litigation, healthcare funding and identify challenges and opportunities associated with globalization; and
  3. Identify challenges and opportunities associated with globalization.
