Temporomandibular Joint Reconstruction

Anders Westermark, DDS, PhD
Associate Professor, Maxillofacial surgery
Medimar
Mariehamn, , Finland

Synopsis

Temporomandibular joint reconstruction can be carried out with either autogenous or alloplastic components. This lecture will cover both areas from the past until today. A special emphasis will be given to the most recent histological findings from tissues surrounding modern TMJ prosthesis after several years of function.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  1. Recognize the differences between autogenous and alloplastic TMJ reconstruction; to know when to use what, and to realize the limitations of both. It is also important to know the differences between former TMJ prostheses and the new designs, and realize that once plagued, the old prosthetic techniques do not have to be carried on to the modern designs.
