Virtual Surgical Planning for Complex Maxillofacial Trauma and Secondary Reconstruction

Steven G Press, DDS
Assistant Professor, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Vanderbilt University Medical Center
Nashville, TN

Synopsis

High-energy facial trauma frequently produces complex, comminuted fractures that require extensive operative repair and complicated secondary reconstruction. Virtual surgical planning enables surgeons to manipulate fracture segments to simulate fracture reduction and provide improved clinical outcome through precise fracture reduction and reduced operating room time through use of preoperatively contoured plates.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the principles and application of Virtual Surgical preoperative planning in complex maxillofacial trauma
  2. Describe the principles for an anatomic based secondary reconstruction in complex maxillofacial trauma patients
