OMS Fellowship Opportunities

A fellowship in oral and maxillofacial surgery is a planned post-residency program that contains education and training in a focused area of the specialty. The focused areas include but not limited to: Cosmetic Facial Surgery; Oral/Head and Neck Oncology; Pediatric Craniomaxillofacial Surgery (Cleft and Craniofacial). All fellowship opportunities are accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.

Description/Requirements:

This fully accredited one year fellowship is designed to train the fellow to become the primary surgeon in a craniofacial/cleft multi-disciplinary team. Graduate of CODA accredited oral and maxillofacial surgery residency training program. On completion of their fellowship training, the fellows will have developed a comprehensive understanding of the diagnosis and management of patients with the full spectrum of cleft and craniofacial abnormalities. The fellows will be an integral part of the Ark-La-Tex Craniofacial & Cleft Center, being involved in the care of all patients treated at the center. Fellows are expected to be involved not only in the surgical treatment of these patients, but in their daily and long-term management as well.

Description/Requirements:

The fully accredited fellowship is designed to produce highly trained surgeons preparing them for a full-time academic career, or to allow them to enter a position at a cleft and craniofacial center, which has a significant need for this experience.

The fellow will have a surgical experience in pediatric adolescent, and adult congenital craniofacial, primary and secondary cleft, orthognathic, reconstructive, esthetic, implant, and craniofacial trauma surgery. Research opportunities in the areas of molecular genetics, cranial suture biology, pediatric trauma, cleft, and congenital craniofacial anomalies are also available as a critical component to the fellowship program.

The Head and Neck Surgery & Microvascular Reconstruction Fellowship is a fully-accredited comprehensive two-year fellowship encompassing the full spectrum of Head & Neck Surgery with interdisciplinary management and microvascular reconstruction.

Clinical focus includes: Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery, Endocrine Surgery, Local & Regional Flap Reconstruction, Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery, Trans-Oral Robotic Surgery and Management of skin cancers. Eligible fellows are selected on a yearly basis and must be graduates or expected graduates of a CODA-accredited Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency training program and be a US citizen or legal alien. Fellows must be eligible for medical or dental licensure in the state of Louisiana.

The head and neck oncology fellowship program at the University of Minnesota is a 24-month program designed to train oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the principals and practice of head and neck oncology. The program has a diverse clinical caseload and will involve the treatment of benign and malignant disease including salivary gland tumors. Training will emphasize the multidisciplinary care of the head and neck oncology patient. A strong research component will be part of the training program. The fellowship is ideally suited for those wishing to pursue a career in academics or those wishing to pursue a hospital based surgical practice.

Since its inception in 1992, the Portland fellowship has seen its alumni go on to careers in academic surgery at institutions in the US, Canada and western Europe. The program is based within the Head and Neck Surgical Associates at Legacy Emanuel Hospital and Portland Providence Hospital Cancer Center. The first year encompasses the full scope of head and neck surgery, from tracheal resection to skull base, with an emphasis on oral and salivary gland cancer. Rotations on medical and radiation oncology complement the fellow's surgical experience. The second year focuses on microvascular free flap and other reconstructive surgery. The first year is accredited, and the accreditation process in underway for the second year. The fellowship is intended for those planning an academic career and its alumni include many notable leaders of the specialty. Description/Requirements:

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery offers a one-year accredited fellowship in oral/head and neck oncologic surgery, which focuses on the surgical management of benign and malignant tumors of this anatomic region. The applicant must possess an MD and/or DDS/DMD degree and have completed a four- or six-year residency program in oral and maxillofacial surgery. During the program, the fellow gains significant experience in the preoperative workup and operative ablation of patients with oral/head and neck neoplasms, including squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity, sarcomas of the jaws, odontogenic tumors, facial skin cancer and salivary gland tumors. Immediate and delayed reconstructive surgery techniques also are reviewed during the fellowship experience. The fellow is expected to become involved in a research project during the year. Other activities include participation in head and neck tumor board meetings and review of histology pertaining to extirpated tumors. At the conclusion of the one-year experience, the fellow will be properly equipped to accept a teaching/clinical position in an academic medical center or private practice depending on his or her career interests.
