AAOMS ICD-10-CM Coding Workshops

December 11th, 2012

The August 2012 debut of the AAOMS ICD-10 Coding Workshop was extremely successful. The AAOMS is planning on continuing teaching the course at various locations, three times a year. The one-day course covers the history, structure, and format of ICD-10-CM as well as provides instruction on how to apply the new coding conventions and guidelines to OMS diagnostic code assignment.

The first workshop was on August 4, 2012 in the Chicago area and the second workshop was November 10, 2012 in conjunction with the Beyond the Basics Coding Workshop on November 11-12, 2012 in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition, ICD-10 will be incorporated into the Beyond the Basics Coding Workshop; therefore attendees will need to bring a draft copy of the ICD-10 manual to the course. ICD-10 manuals may be purchased by through OptumInsight (formerly Ingenix).

AAOMS has received numerous member requests for earlier and more frequent ICD-10-CM courses in 2012 and 2013. Although the ICD-10-CM workshops are in high demand, industry experts including AHIMA and the American Academy of Professional Coders recommend that ICD-10-CM workshops/courses are held within a 6 month time frame from the October 1, 2014 implementation date. These experts believe the earlier the workshops, the more information will be lost once the implementation date finally arrives. AAOMS will be providing more ICD-10-CM workshops throughout 2013 and early 2014 before the October 1, 2014 implementation date for ICD-10-CM. Members should periodically check the AAOMS website workshops page for more information on ICD-10-CM education.
