The AAOMS has hosted two webinars pertaining to the implementation of ICD-10. In September 2010,"Making the Transition to ICD-10-CM" was held introducing ICD-10 to all participants. The webinar provided an overview of the similarities and differences between the ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM classification systems. In addition, implementation issues gave the participants ideas of key steps to take for implementation. In October 2011, "ICD-10: A Clinical Documentation Challenge" not only compared ICD-9 and ICD-10, but also emphasized the importance of complete and detailed documentation on proper code selection. "Making the Transition to ICD-10-CM" and "ICD-10: A Clinical Documentation Challenge" were both presented by distinguished AAOMS coding and billing workshop speaker, Dawn W. Jackson, DrPH, RHIA, CCS-P, FAHIMA. OMSs were encouraged to participate along with coding and billing staff as ICD-10-CM will be a major change affecting not only coding, but will impact physician documentation as well. The new diagnostic coding system is scheduled to officially replace ICD-9-CM October 1, 2013.
You can now view the Questions and Answers that were presented on the AAOMS Web site on the Meetings and Continuing Education page. If you were not able to attend, you may purchase an MP3 or audio recording of each event through the AAOMS website.
