CMS released the latest set of HIPAA regulations in the January 23, 2004 Federal Register. The HIPAA Standard Unique Identifier for Healthcare Providers adopts a National Provider Identifier (NPI) for all health care providers, including oral and maxillofacial surgeons, to use to identify themselves when rendering an electronic transaction to a public or private payer.
