Resident Member Benefits
AAOMS provides many opportunities for residents to continue their education. The following resources are available to members of the Resident Organization of AAOMS (ROAAOMS).
ROAAOMS Executive Committee
The legislative and administrative body of the ROAAOMS shall be the Executive Committee. The officers of the ROAAOMS who also serve on the Executive Committee are Chairman, Vice-Chairman, and Immediate Past-Chairman. Additionally, the Executive Committee includes six District Representatives elected by vote of the membership of each district at the annual meeting of the ROAAOMS. In addition to the elected officers, the Executive Committee shall include one (1) staff liaison who will serve as the executive committee coordinator and one (1) faculty section representative. Vice Chairman and Chairman succeed to their respective offices by virtue of prior election.
ROAAOMS Strategic Plan
ROAAOMS continues to follow its vision, purpose and mission and developed a strategic plan which includes four major goals:
- Improve and enhance communication among its members and its affiliates
- Educate residents concerning the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery and issues facing the specialty
- Assist in the recruitment and retention of highly qualified professionals in oral and maxillofacial surgery
- Demonstrate the value of oral and maxillofacial surgery to OMS residents, dental students, public, professional and pre-dental audiences.
ROAAOMS Program Liaisons
ROAAOMS has developed a network of residents entitled, "ROAAOMS Program Liaisons" (one resident per residency training program) to assist the executive committee in communicating important information and upcoming events to all residents. In addition, ROAAOMS continues its efforts in increasing resident awareness and encouraging them to take ownership of and become involved in their specialty.
A future goal for ROAAOMS is to convene a meeting for program liaisons to provide an orientation to ROAAOMS/AAOMS's purpose, governance and activities, the meaning and value of organized dentistry and the importance of continuing membership in AAOMS post residency training. This meeting would provide opportunities to exchange ideas among OMS residents and learn from others in the specialty in a collegial and enjoyable environment.
If you are interested in serving as your program liaison, please contact Mary Allaire-Schnitzer at 800-822-6637 ext. 4315 or via email at mallaire@aaoms.org
OMS Reference Guide for Residents
The Resident Organization of the AAOMS developed a reference guide for residents to provide essential information on basic patient care.
The OMS Reference Guide for residents provides a valuable tool to quickly obtain answers to questions that arise during treatment, as well as an organized resource for review of the material essential for practice in OMS and board certification. In addition, the guide provides information that residents can use early in their training and OMS career and explains how AAOMS can assist them.
The Guide will be updated every three years to reflect the most contemporary care of OMS patients. Obtain your copy today.

Residents may attend this event but must pay the general registration fee.
Publications & References
A key benefit the Association offers to its fellows, members and resident members is the ability to gather and share knowledge about the specialty.
Resident E-News
One of the main purposes of the Resident Organization of the AAOMS (ROAAOMS) is to improve and enhance communication among its members and educate residents about OMS and issues facing the specialty. In order to increase communication at a decreased cost, ROAAOMS replaced the printed quarterly newsletter, Resident Reach, with a monthly broadcast email to all residents entitled, Resident E-News. The e-newsletter is disseminated on the third Friday of every month and serves as the main communication tool among residents.
AAOMS Web site
The AAOMS Web site serves as an important communication tool to enhance the role of residents in the association. Included in the site are member news, a meeting calendar, career opportunities, residency resources, patient information, provider referral resources for new patients and links to related sites of interest for oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Also included is a section exclusive to AAOMS fellows and members. ROAAOMS continues to review and update the content of the resident section on the AAOMS Web site and welcomes any ideas, suggestions and/or comments from residents.
AAOMS Today
Published six times a year, AAOMS Today serves as an important information resource for fellows and members on all activity occurring within the Association. Up-to-date articles keep fellows and members abreast of Association activities, while articles on practice management, coding and reimbursement, advocacy and others are designed to help fellows and members personally in their day-to-day practices. The classified advertisements are also a resource for fellows and members seeking positions or selling a practice.
AAOMS Membership Directory
Fellows and members annually receive an updated AAOMS Membership Directory. The Directory contains a listing of fellows, members, candidates and residents alphabetically and geographically throughout the United States and internationally. The Directory also provides information about related OMS organizations, headquarters staff, House of Delegates, trustee districts with membership distribution, regional and component societies, past presidents, future meetings and more.
The Resident Organization sends annual verification letters to all resident members to assist staff in maintaining accurate and complete membership records for all resident members. As the scope of practice continues to evolve and technological innovations present new opportunities to better serve patients, resident involvement in AAOMS strengthens the specialty. ROAAOMS encourages all residents to use the Directory as a reference and encourages residents to remain active in AAOMS throughout their careers.
Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (JOMS)
The Journal serves as the premier peer-reviewed resource for scientific and clinical information. Published monthly, the Journal contains clinical articles, scientific articles, case reports, special contributions and a section for continuing education (CE) credit. AAOMS resident members receive an annual complimentary subscription for the Journal.
For more information regarding AAOMS Products and Publications or the JOMS, visit AAOMS online at www.aaoms.org or contact the Membership Information Line at 800-822-6637.
In-Training Examination
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Self-Assessment Tool (OMSSAT)
The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Assessment Tool (OMSSAT) is an assessment tool developed to permit residents, interns and practicing surgeons an opportunity to assess their knowledge of the breadth and scope of the oral and maxillofacial surgery specialty.
The questions/items are developed by a committee of oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Editors for each section or content area in the OMSSAT review items. Valid psychometric criteria are applied at each stage of development. The OMSSAT is criterion referenced and is not graded on a curve. Items will not be equated because a new OMSSAT will be developed and administered yearly.
The OMSSAT serves as a learning tool as well as an assessment mechanism. After scores have been reported all participants will have online access to the entire self assessment, correct response, a rationale for the correct answer, and references for each item. We believe this will be advantageous for future study needs.
The OMSSAT is a computer based examination available in over 200 testing centers across the United States. The examination blueprint includes:
- Medical assessment and management of surgical patients
- Anesthesia
- Dentoalveolar
- Trauma
- Orthognathic/Cleft/Craniofacial/Cosmetic
- Temporomandibular Disorders/Facial Pain
- Pathology and Reconstruction
The OMSSAT will consist of 200 items. There will be 50 items in 4 subject areas each year. The following year the next four subject areas will be examined. Once the examination is scored, each resident will receive the examination, associated answers, item rationale and references to support the correct response. A new examination will be developed and administered yearly.
For more information regarding the OMSSAT, please contact Ms. Mary Allaire-Schnitzer at 800-822-6637 ext. 4315 or via email at mallaire@aaoms.org.
