The Young Investigators' Day program is scheduled for May 6th and immediately precedes the May 7-8, 2009 Research Summit. We encourage you to attend both events. Oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) faculty members are encouraged to attend the Young Investigators' Day with their residents or senior dental students who are planning to apply to an OMS residency program and have an interest in research.

The goal of the Young Investigators' Day is to provide OMS faculty and residents with mentoring and networking opportunities. The Young Investigators' Day program will focus on the following topics:

  • Clinician-Scientists and the Academic Medical Center: Insights into the scholarship expectations of the modern research university, how clinician-scientists fit within the rapidly transforming academic health center, optimal career paths for different individuals and how junior faculty can strategically plan out a productive academic career.

  • Finding Meaning and Fulfillment In An Academic Career: A panel of leading OMS educators will provide their individual insights into the challenges, rewards, and requisite skills of a career path in academic OMS.

  • Barriers to Career Development: Focus Groups: Enabled by assigned facilitators, participants will brainstorm in small groups to develop a list of barriers that may prevent their development into successful academic clinician-scientists.

  • NIH - A Facilitator of Your Academic Career: This session will focus on the NIH resources available to clinician scientists and how to avail of them. Senior NIH administrators will share their personal insights on the application process for clinical research grants at the National Institutes of Health. A general overview of NIH granting and funding of clinical studies and the peer review process will be presented along with strategies to involve institutes outside of the traditional NIDCR.

  • Having It All - Practical Strategies for Meeting the Competing Demands of Academia: Through personal narratives, the panel of clinician-scientists will provide insight into how they come to terms with the competing demands on their time and how they balance career objectives with personal and family goals.
