Overview

The Communications Specialist reports to the Associate Executive Director, Communications and Publications, and is responsible for providing writing and editorial assistance for Association programs, campaigns, initiatives and publications. 

Qualifications
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, knowledge of AP style
  • Excellent project and time management skills
  • Ability to think strategically
  • Ability to work independently but collaboratively
  • Experience in healthcare editorial and public relations activities helpful
  • Presentation/public speaking experience helpful
  • Word processing, spreadsheet and related computer application knowledge
  • Significant professional writing experience
  • College degree in journalism, communications, public relations or related field
Key Accountabilities
  • Write and edit copy for Association and affiliated organization programs, campaigns, initiatives and publications to ensure message and style match the AAOMS brand policies and are consistent with the AAOMS strategic plan.
  • Disseminate materials through all available channels to trade and general media.
  • Recruit and facilitate trade and general media attendance at and/or coverage of AAOMS Annual Meeting and Dental Implant Conference.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Write and edit copy for Association and affiliated organization programs, campaigns, initiatives and publications to ensure message and style match the AAOMS brand policies and are consistent with the AAOMS strategic plan.
    • Work to independently research and/or interview appropriate sources to develop content.
    • Reflect in writing an understanding of the audiences for AAOMS messaging, including members, consumers, trade and general media, legislators, dental students, etc.
    • Meet deadlines to allow for reviews and approvals by internal stakeholders, members and leadership.
    • Complete writing assignments for a variety of audiences and purposes, including AAOMS and JOMS press releases, website copy, talking points, Informational Campaign and marketing collateral, trustee newsletters, blogs, letters to the editor and op-eds, social media, news and feature stories for internal and external audiences, scripts, speeches, PowerPoints, welcome letters and president’s e-newsletter and columns.
    • Conduct editorial review of printed association materials.
    • Provide editorial and copy assistance to affiliated organizations for their publications.
    • Conduct editorial review of correspondence, proposals, reports, etc., for staff upon request.
  • Disseminate materials through all available channels to trade and general media.
    • Use contracted online services to schedule and distribute press releases to appropriate media outlets.
    • Contact media representatives when there is an AAOMS message to disseminate.
    • Develop an annual editorial calendar for news releases utilizing the contracted online services.
    • Develop comprehensive trade media lists and build relations with media personnel.
    • Coordinate posting of press materials to the AAOMS.org website.
    • Compile media coverage reports.
    • Stay current on media coverage and industry trends.
  • Recruit and facilitate trade and general media attendance at and/or coverage of AAOMS Annual Meeting and Dental Implant Conference.
    • Build media databases for educational events.
    • Develop and distribute media interest forms.
    • Coordinate media registration.
    • Facilitate on-site media visits as needed.
  • Other Administrative Responsibilities
    • Perform other similar or related duties as requested or assigned by the Associate Executive Director, Communications and Publications.
