As of Jan. 1, 2022, new ACCME standards are in effect. The Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education are designed to ensure separation of accredited CE and commercial influence. The major highlights include:

• New Terms
  • “Eligible” vs. “ineligible”: Ineligible companies are those whose primary business is producing, marketing, selling, re-selling or distributing healthcare products used by or on patients. (Replaces “commercial interest.”)
  • “Mitigate” rather than “resolve” for disclosures.
• Marketing
  • Must obtain explicit learner consent to share names or contact information with ineligible companies.
• Disclosure & Mitigation
  • Speakers, planners and all faculty must report all financial relationships. Provider will determine relevancy.
  • Report on 24-month cycle (rather than 12). Disclosures should still be collected yearly.
• Activities
  • Marketing, exhibits and nonaccredited education developed by or with influence from an ineligible company must not occur in the educational space within 30 minutes before or after accredited education.

The AAOMS Joint Providership program is offered for use by State and Regional Societies of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as a method for providing both continuing dental and continuing medical education credit to participants in their educational activities.
